There are some journeys that you plan on having because they seem to be the right thing to do, and some that leave an imprint on your memory long after you returned home. My Langtang Valley trek, however, belonged to the latter group. Knowing that I wanted to walk across the Himalayas did not mean that I understood how life would change when I was miles away from the busy streets. Everything grew calmer as I ventured further into the valley – the simplicity and lifestyle that the locals had chosen drew me towards the mountains.
Leaving the Busy Streets Behind
While the busy streets of Kathmandu were something that the trek offered gradually, those who choose to travel across the Himalayas experience a slower change. As I ventured deeper into the valley, the roads grew narrower and the scenery greener. The rhythm of life was slower.
Starting a trekking adventure is not entirely intuitive either. As you spend hours and hours walking the trail, the next destination does not seem that important. There were days where I focused on putting every step together to get myself to the next place, and days where I simply stopped to enjoy the valley around me.
Finding My Rhythm on the Trail
The first few hours of a trek are not exactly easy, mainly due to you still finding your rhythm on the trail. This rhythm, however, is far from the regular hustle and bustle of the city. As you walk, you slowly learn to focus on what matters the changing scenery along the trail. The trees, mountains, small settlements and empty expanses of the valley all of these contribute to a different experience on every section of the trek. The most enjoyable part of a trek, in my opinion, was that you simply did not have to hurry. After all, the mountains do not move.
The Simple Comfort of Teahouse Life
The teahouse accommodation in the Langtang Valley also contributed greatly to the experience of a trek. As I spent more and more hours walking the trail, a single room and a good local meal became an unparalleled experience. Being able to simply spend a night in a mountain lodge without having to worry about much else was something that I also cherished greatly on the trek.
The teahouse experience was also different from sleeping in a regular hotel. As every trekker that I met spent hours walking the trail, preparing for the following day’s adventure was not a priority. The conversations that I had there often started with what trails had people walked that day and where they intended to go the following morning.
The people I met on the trail made a difference to my trek. It allowed me to understand that, while the mountains are impressive, the people add to the charm of walking the trail.
When the Mountains Felt Bigger
Langtang Valley became more impressive as I started to understand that the mountains simply did not move. There were times on the trail when I saw myself as tiny as the surroundings dictated. On certain occasions, I struggled with the trail because it took too much out of me at times when I still had far to go. This was one of the most valuable lessons that I learned on the Langtang Valley trek I learned to accept the challenges of a trek rather than push myself to finish.
The People and Places Along the Way
The people and settlements that I encountered were also an interesting addition to my trek. Being a mountainous region, the valley is also home to many people that call these high altitudes their homes.
Walking through settlements offered me a chance to see and experience something different. Every step that I took through the mountains reminded me that travelling is not solely about the ‘main sights’. Sometimes, it is these everyday occurrences that are far more memorable than the usual tourist spots.
Reaching Kyanjin Gompa
Reaching Kyanjin Gompa, for me, was one of the most memorable parts of my trek. While much of the trail had been the same, arriving at this point in the valley was something else entirely. The mountains around me made for a calm and serene environment. Having spent days walking this trail, I could look back and cherish every step of the way as I knew that I had come a long way since I embarked on this adventure. It was not a specific moment or a place that defined this trek for me it was all of the little things that I had encountered that made arriving at Kyanjin Gompa special.
What I Took Away From the Journey
It is hard to say that the Langtang Valley Trek solely defined who I was as a person but it did teach me valuable lessons about travelling. The most important one of these, in my opinion, was that you should learn to enjoy your journey and the people that you meet along the way. Here are a few more things that I learned from this unforgettable adventure:
- Take your time and learn to focus on the journey and not the destination
- Make sure to keep your expectations realistic as the most memorable parts of a trek are often the challenges.
- Learn to observe the local way of life and not only focus on the main sights.
- Make sure to make space for these everyday occurrences because they often become the most memorable parts of any adventure.
More Than Just a Trek
The Langtang Valley Trek gave me many valuable insights into how travel should be a slower experience than one might assume. While the mountains offer some of the most spectacular views imaginable, the trek was a great way to allow myself to step out of my comfort zone.
What I remember most about this adventure was not one specific place or event. It was the feeling of walking the trail, discovering the valley and slowly adapting to the pace of mountain life. I knew that I embarked on a journey of a trek, but I returned home with a collection of memories that reminded me of the beauty of slow travel.
